The visit focused on the development of the S(kim) as an integrated service facility at the university, as well as insights into modern approaches to university organization—particularly with regard to the application of ITIL principles to administration.
“The delegation was impressed by the wide range of insights and the openness with which TH OWL shared its experiences in organizational development. In addition to successful approaches, challenges and the lessons learned from them were also openly discussed. The intensive exchange provided numerous ideas for the further development of the university’s own structures at Worms University of Applied Sciences,” the S(kim) reported.
The focus of the technical insights was on the S(kim), which brings together the library, IT, and teaching & learning divisions at TH OWL into a single organizational unit. The guests received a comprehensive overview of the development of this integrated service unit and its operations.
Dr. Lars Köller explained the strategic development of S(kim) and also reported on the state-wide HITS NRW initiative. Andrea Kruel highlighted the library’s role as a modern learning and service hub, while Carsten Halm presented the developments and working methods in IT. Yvonne Fischer provided insights into the work of the Teaching & Learning team, while Benjamin Mellies explained how S(kim)’s internal marketing supports the other teams within S(kim).
Elli Warkentin and Jörn Urselmann used the example of the joint first-level service provided by S(kim) and the Department of Student Affairs to illustrate how the service orientation embedded in S(kim) works across organizational boundaries in concrete projects. The project demonstrates how close collaboration between different organizational units creates a centralized and efficient service for students and staff.
Beyond S(kim), the delegation gained insights into other areas of university administration. Melanie Overkämping presented the responsibilities and organization of the Finance Department, thereby providing a broader perspective on the administrative structures at TH OWL.
The visit highlighted the added value offered by cross-university exchange. By openly sharing its experiences and providing insights into its organizational development, TH OWL generates valuable inspiration for other institutions. At the same time, such encounters lay the foundation for sustainable collaboration across university and state borders.
