The Digital Mechanical Engineering – Virtual Product Development degree program is based on a structured planning framework that systematically links theory, practice, and digitalization. This framework forms the common thread throughout the degree program and helps students gain a comprehensive understanding of complex technical interrelationships – from brainstorming and Virtual Product Development to real-world implementation.

With clearly defined modules, project phases, and elective areas, the planning framework offers both orientation and flexibility. This allows students to set individual main focus areas and develop practical skills in a targeted manner – always with an eye on the requirements of modern, digital industry.

Virtual Product Development processes

The Virtual Product Development degree program can be studied in two ways:

• Traditional: As a full-time program with a 5-day study week.
• Dual: As a full-time program with a 5-day study week.
• Practical semester: As a variant with an integrated practical semester, the BA degree program is extended by one semester (to 7 semesters), but offers the opportunity to gain extensive practical experience during your degree program.

Regardless of which option you choose, you will benefit from a degree program with exceptionally good prospects for your professional career.

The Virtual Product Development degree program provides students with extensive knowledge in the field oftechnical design. In addition to the compulsory subjects, students can choose from a wide range of electives. 

This choice allows you to delve into the course content that interests you and to specialize.

Our degree programs are designed for on-campus learning. Classes are held Monday through Friday according to your schedule. This ensures that all your courses are offered without overlap.

However, we also offer extensive online support. Many of our courses are available online and provide you with the necessary materials to study at your own pace. This does not completely replace attending in-person classes, but it does help you complete your degree program on time while juggling a part-time job and childcare. Our degree programs are characterized by extensive online support, which in some cases even makes it possible to study while working.

Everyone has individual requirements and expectations for their degree program. Of course, it is not possible to include everything on a website, as this would be too confusing and detailed. That is why we offer academicadvising.

Practical relevance and industry contact right from the start!

Internships in industrial companies are part of our study concept! For the Virtual Product Development degree program, this means an eight-week specialized internship at the end of the fourth semester.

We recommend that you contact our internship coordinator, Prof. Jochen Dörr, before starting an internship. He can advise you and assess whether the internship you are aiming for meets our requirements. If you already have proven practical experience, he will check whether this can be recognized as an internship.

Further information about the internship

After submitting an application, you must complete matriculation.

First, you apply for a place at university. As the degree program does not have restricted admission, you will receive confirmation of your place immediately after completing the online application.

Following acceptance, you must formally complete the matriculation process for the degree program. The university will inform you of the necessary documents after you have completed your application. This way, you won't forget anything!

Matriculation is handled by the TH's Enrollment Office. Your contact person for the Innovative Production Systems degree program is Ms. Mara Blanke. She will be happy to help you with any questions you may have about the matriculation process.

You've done it: you've found the right degree program for you and completed matriculation.

But what happens next?

At the beginning of the winter semester, your degree program will start with a welcome week, which begins with general information and becomes more and more specific to your degree program. We will show you the premises, the laboratories, how the timetable works, and who to ask if you need further information.
