Borrowing (Library)

Borrowing

In the library of the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts you can borrow books, journals, videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs, etc. at the locations Lemgo, Detmold and Höxter with your user card or the CampusCard (KISOWL) at the self-checkout machine or at the service point

There is no library at the Herford campus. Herford students can use the libraries at all three locations. By the way: Students at the other three locations are not restricted to their own location, but can also use the on-site services of all libraries. The opening hours of the libraries can be found on the opening and service hours overview page.
You can find all media in the university library via the

Media search

Information on using the media search can be found in the S(kim) documentation media search.

Who can borrow from the TH-OWL - how do you get a library card?

The TH-OWL University Library provides its professors, lecturers, students and staff with literature for teaching, research and study purposes.
In addition, all other interested people from the region can use the library. They have to pay an annual fee of 15 euros (students from other universities in North Rhine-Westphalia and school pupils receive CampusCard (KISOWL) free of charge).

University members can apply for their CampusCard independently, provided they have a valid user account.

External users must first register themselves in the university's identity management. They can then obtain a CampusCard (KISOWL) from the library on presentation of their identity card.

Your loan periods and renewal options

The loan period is usually 20 opening days. It can be extended twice, provided that the loan period has not been exceeded and no other user has reserved an item.

An extension can be requested from five days before the return date; this can be done in the library at the self-checkout machine and at the service point, by telephone or independently via the media search (to meet the deadline, it must be completed by 23:59).

Follow these steps:

  1. You log in to the account function.
  2. After logging in with your user name and password for the university user account, you can start the renewal function .

Media with a short term loan period (e.g. bound journals) can be borrowed for 5 opening days. A renewal is not possible.

As soon as media are not returned within the time limit, fees must be paid. Please also note the regulations for administrative fees.

The self-checkout machine: borrow, renew and return media independently

At the self-checkout machine in the library, users can use their CampusCard (KISOWL) or library card to borrow and return books or renew loan periods. Information about the library account can also be called up. The account provides information about fees still to be paid, borrowed media or orders.
The self-checkout machine is used via a self-explanatory user interface on a touch screen.

Order books from other TH OWL locations to your library

You can use the media search to order books from our library that are not at your library location to your branch.
Students studying in Herford select the most suitable library for them (Lemgo, Detmold, Höxter) to order media to this location.

Follow these steps:

  1. Media that are not currently on loan can be recognised by the note "available".  By clicking on the title, you can find out where the item is located.  As soon as you select a different location as the pick-up location, you can order it to this location.
  2. Log in with your user name and password of the university user account.
  3. Once you have registered, the order will be noted for you.

As soon as the copy has arrived at your branch, you will be notified by e-mail.
The e-mail will be sent to your university e-mail address, which you can access via webmail.

Note:

This service is free of charge for you.

Scale of fees

If you exceed your loan periods, you will incur fees. All details can be found in the statutes on the levying of university (Satzung über die Erhebung von Hochschulgebühren) (§§ 4-5 and 7-8) as well as in the amendment statutes of 2022 (Änderungssatzung von2022), which concern §§ 4 and 5.

You can get an overview of your account balance when you have logged in to the media search or at the self-checkout machine. After returning the books, you can pay the fees at the circulation counters at the fee machines in the libraries using your CampusCard (KIS OWL).

If you order interlibrary loans, there is usually no charge for university members. External users pay a fee of 3 euros for a successfully completed interlibrary loan. Details on interlibrary loan fees can be found in the amended statutes on the charging of university (geänderte Satzung über die Erhebung von Hochschulgebühren) (§ 6).
