Remote Service (ISL-Online)
Facts about ISL Online
ISL-Online is a product that contains several components, all of which have been designed to support remote users.
The most common case is certainly the "connection" to a user's desktop in order to either only see the screen content or to be able to control it remotely.
The ISL-Light is characterized by the fact that communication is always encrypted. It does not matter whether both devices can establish a direct connection or whether the data stream has to be routed via the central server: In both cases, end-to-end encryption is established and the data stream cannot be decrypted by third parties (or only with extremely high effort). In addition, the intermediary server is located within the S(kim) infrastructure so that the data stream itself does not leave the campus.
A "one-time program" is usually built for the computer to be controlled, which can only be used for one session. Unintentional/unwanted remote control through misuse of the program is therefore impossible.
Initiating a session
Step 1 - Download the software
To provide assistance, please proceed as follows:
- Open the page https://rs.th-owl.de/
- Open the menu item "Downloads" at the top right
- Download the "ISL Light" program
Note: Depending on the operating system you are using for the download, the server will provide the binary package for Windows, Linux, or Apple macOS.
While a directly executable file (*.exe) is provided for Windows, the server provides a ZIP archive for Linux, the contents of which can first be unpacked and then started directly.
Accepting a session
Step 1 - Download client

To receive support, the connection can be continued via the support form.
To do this, open the link: https://rs.th-owl.de and enter the ID you received from your supporter. An information page will then open, from which you can also download the one-time client.
Tips and Tricks
Permanent client - A client program is provided at the address https://rs.th-owl.de/start/ISLLightClient that is not limited to one session but can be reused. However, a valid session ID must first be entered here for each start, which also prevents unintentional remote control even in the event of an unintentional start. There is then no need to download the program again.
General client - If you download the "ISL Light 4" program from the download page, it can be used both as a support provider and as a client. There is no need to download it again.
If the person you are talking to has access to the email, you can transfer the session ID and the link more easily:
To do this, click on the letter symbol (bottom left) in the ISL program. This will automatically create an email that already contains a suitable link and text. Add the target address and send the email.
For security reasons, the invitation sent to a person to be supported also contains a reference to the inviting person. If no further information is available, the supporter's login is used, which is not very appropriate in the university environment ("abc-123" instead of "Martin Mustermann"). To change this situation, it is advisable to add the necessary data to your own profile.
To do this, log in to https://rs.th-owl.de/ via the menu item "login" in the top right-hand corner:
Use the login details that are also valid for your e-mail account.
After logging in, you will find an entry "Profile" in the menu on the right, which will take you to the form for changing your profile data:
Please be sure to enter your full name and your e-mail address. The latter cannot be changed directly. To do this, please click on the "Change email" button. You will then be taken to a dialog that will ask you to confirm your registration data again.
