Sync & Share

What is "Sync & Share"?

"Micro Focus Filr" is a "Sync & Share" service and offers similar functionality as e. g. Dropbox. Unlike Dropbox, however, all data is stored on the servers of the TH OWL at the Lemgo location.

In addition to the term "Sync & Share" service, the manufacturer's term "Filr" or together with the manufacturer's name "Micro Focus Filr" is often used. We only use the term "Sync & Share" in this documentation.

Why data protection?

Storing the data on the university's servers guarantees a significantly higher level of protection for your data compared to the use of commercial products (Google Drive, Sky Drive, Dropbox, iCloud). Because of the current data protection framework, the S(kim) currently expressly advises against using US providers of "Sync & Share" services in particular. This applies in particular if you work with research data and/or personal data.

How is the documentation written?

The manual was created by S(kim). It deliberately does not describe all the functions of the "Micro Focus Filr". Rather, it describes the core functionality, i. e. sharing files and folders with other people, and the other functions of collaboration (cooperation & collaboration). If you've already worked with solutions like Dropbox, switching to Micro Focus Filr shouldn't be a problem.

Who is the offer intended for?

The use of "Sync & Share" is currently designed for employees of the university. However, the service is also intended for students and employees who work on tasks/projects/etc. together (cooperation & collaboration). Possible scenarios include a university project (th-owl.de/intern/university-projects), student project/group work or a research group. Further details on using this service can be found in the Application section.

What can I find where?

In the following, we briefly explain the individual topics of the chapters in order to provide you with an individual introduction to the topic "Sync & Share" depending on your level of knowledge:

Application – The first chapter explains the terms of use of the "Sync & Share" service and the associated usage scenarios. Here you can find out how and in what way you can use this service.

Web interface –You get a first start via the web interface, i. e. a web address (URL). In this chapter you will learn about the basic structure of "Sync & Share", starting with the login at the web interface. Since this structure is similar in the also available client applications (additional software, apps), it is an important chapter for the basic understanding. In addition, in this chapter we explain the four content areas "My Files", "Shared for Me", "Shared by Me", "Network Folders". Since these areas also appear in the following desktop and mobile client versions, we refer to them in this chapter as well.

Windows & macOS-Client – In these two chapters, you will learn more about the use of operating system-specific client software for using "Sync & Share". Along the process "Procurement (download) -> Installation -> Configuration -> "Use", you will learn the exact procedure for the MS Windows and Apple macOS operating systems.
