Monthly system updates – briefly explained

In the middle of each month (around the 15th), S(kim) provides the centrally managed computers in the administration and in the IWD with necessary software updates. Users are notified via pop-up that an update is pending.

Since these notifications can be disruptive to everyday work, we would like to explain the process and background of the updates in a transparent manner.

What happens during the monthly updates?

In short: S(kim) bundles the latest software updates and installs them collectively on the centrally managed devices.

In detail: Microsoft and other software manufacturers release updates regularly. In addition, unscheduled updates are released, for example to fix security vulnerabilities or program errors.
The S(kim) collects these updates and provides them in a bundle, so that you are usually only confronted with update notifications once a month.

Can I influence the timing of the update?

In short: Yes—you can set the restart yourself within 72 hours.

In detail: As soon as the update pop-up appears, you have the option to perform the update immediately or to postpone it. A reminder is
displayed every two hours. You have a total of 72 hours from the first notification.

If no restart is performed within this period, it will take place automatically, regardless of whether you are currently working.
The easiest way to set the time is to trigger the restart yourself.

How long does an update take?

In short: Between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on the scope.

In detail: The duration depends on the type and number of updates.
Minor updates, such as driver updates, only slightly prolong the restart. Major feature updates (e.g., for Office applications), on the other hand, can take up to 15 minutes or longer, especially if multiple restarts are required.

Why are updates less disruptive on private computers?

In short: Updates are installed more frequently, but in smaller units.

In detail: Private devices usually receive updates continuously and in the background. This means that individual interruptions are shorter and less noticeable. In a centrally managed IT environment, however, it is crucial that all devices are at a uniform and verified level. Therefore, updates are bundled and rolled out at fixed times.
