Many of the university’s services were temporarily unavailable on Tuesday evening, May 5. However, the cause was not a technical issue within the university, but rather a Germany-wide problem affecting websites with the “.de” domain extension.
This was caused by an error in the Domain Name System (DNS), the “Internet’s address book,” which temporarily prevented web addresses from being resolved correctly. To users, it appeared as though numerous services were offline, even though the servers were still functioning.
