TH OWL has a new faculty structure

At TH OWL, we offer first-class quality of study and, as an educational partner in the region, we take responsibility for training excellent graduates who are well equipped to meet the challenges of the future. In order to sustainably expand our academic contribution in teaching, research, and the transfer of innovation and knowledge, we are now restructuring our faculties as part of a structural reform.
The ten previous faculties at TH OWL will be merged into seven new faculties in order to achieve greater integration. This will result in greater flexibility in the range of courses on offer while at the same time sharpening the university's academic profile.
„We see ourselves as a partner to this dynamic economic region. Together with and for the region, we educate young people and prepare them for the challenges of the future. Through scientific progress, we develop creative, innovative, and sustainable solutions to the major issues of the future, in line with our mission statement.“
Professor Dr. Jürgen Krahl, President of TH OWL
Objectives
The structural reform creates creative freedom and interdisciplinary specialization opportunities for students at TH OWL. The new faculty structures pursue three core objectives:
Our promise to students and the region is to provide exceptional quality education. This means efficient study programs, a high degree of interdisciplinary permeability, and teaching staff with practical experience who prepare our graduates excellently for the ever-changing job profiles.
As part of the structural reform, content clusters are being formed in which we are initially bundling existing study programs. We are also developing new degree programs and new teaching formats within these interdisciplinary structures. Overall, this allows for greater flexibility in individual study paths and gives students more freedom of choice.
A clear example of this is the Precision Farming degree program, in which students focus in particular on the tension between agriculture that conserves resources as much as possible and is also economically viable. The relocation of the degree program from Höxter to Lemgo enables integration with the expertise in automation and digitalization available there. This results in additional opportunities for specialization during the course of study, and students can also benefit from a more vibrant campus life.
As an educational partner in the region, we are committed of training a sufficient number of skilled professionals and managers for the region. In doing so, we are also explicitly addressing demographic challenges.
Our goal is to attract more students who, as successful graduates, will further develop the region in their professional practice. We want to attract more people to study at TH OWL in the various faculties, for example by increasingly targeting international audiences and offering new formats for flexible, individualized study programs beyond the traditional full-time model. This is based on considerations regarding the consolidation and further development of the existing range of courses.
The principles of economic efficiency and thrift guide our actions. By exploiting synergies and investing in sustainable projects, we are sharpening our academic profile and positioning ourselves for the future. We use the freedom we have created to develop relevant subject areas that address the future skilled labor needs of the regional economy.
This is clearly illustrated by the example of computer science: in a joint foundation course, we combine the expertise of several faculties at the Lemgo campus and offer students a wide range of specializations. This creates synergies in the areas that support science and in the use of infrastructure, which benefit teaching, research, and knowledge transfer.
