Girls’Day and Boys'Day 2025

A day full of insights into exciting professions and fields of study

Get hands-on, try things out and discover new interests

Over 130 students experienced this year's Girls' Day and Boys' Day 2025 at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences - at the Detmold, Lemgo, Höxter and Herford sites. TH OWL opened up its laboratories, workshops and studios to bring job profiles to life and break down role stereotypes.

At the Kreativ Campus Detmold, girls slipped into the role of civil engineers, programmed a masonry robot and learned how water supply and disposal works. Boys designed rooms in the interior design workshop and created their own work of color art.

At the Innovation Campus Lemgo, girls immersed themselves in the world of STEM subjects: they carried out sensory tests, developed alcohol-free cocktails in the FoodLab, tested steel samples under the microscope, programmed robot arms, built their own water rockets, which they also launched, and printed their favorite symbol with the 3D printer. The boys spent a day as assistants to the university chancellor and gained an insight into the administration.

At the Sustainable Campus Höxter, girls worked as environmental engineers, examined water samples, analyzed leaf dyes in the laboratory and explored the connections between biodiversity, landscape planning and nature conservation in the botanical garden. They observed wild bees and learned how plants give indications of environmental changes.

In Herford, girls spent a day soldering LED clamps as managers and learned how technical and organizational processes interact in digital management.

The focus at all locations was on taking part, trying things out and shaping things yourself - and encouraging people to think about new career paths.

We are already looking forward to the next Girls' Day and Boys' Day on April 23, 2026, when we will be back with exciting activities.

Civil engineer: The job that holds the world together

Here at the Department of Civil Engineering at the OWL University of Applied Sciences on the Detmold campus, you will learn about the construction of the future, get to control a robot, find out exciting things about water management and gain an insight into student life.

Be a student for a day
In two workshops, you will learn more about digital construction and water management. You will program and control a robot and see new possibilities for what the construction site of tomorrow could look like. The second workshop on water management will give you an insight into the laboratories and the exciting topics surrounding water as a resource.

Shaping the world with houses, roads and more
Have you ever wondered how a bridge is built so that it can carry cars and trains safely across a river? Or how it is possible to always have enough drinking water coming out of your tap at home? Civil engineers have the answer! They plan and build the things that hold our world together - from roads and bridges to large buildings and all the infrastructure we need in our everyday lives.

Maybe civil engineering is a career for you too?

Robotics: from mathematics to programming and control

For an engineer today and in the future, it is important to master robot technology, including mathematical modeling, program development and robot control. This know-how is the basis for the innovative further development of robotics and for successful applications in practice. This is why the “Technical Logistics” laboratory at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences offers future female engineers the opportunity to come into contact with robot technology using the collaborative robot from Universal Robots.

The students start with mathematics to learn about the connection between mathematics and robots, then program under supervision and finally test the program to control the robot in an application.

Professor Dr.-Ing. L. Li is responsible for the Department of Technical Logistics at the TH OWL. She is looking forward to many exciting and interesting discussions in the “Technical Logistics” laboratory on Girls'Day on April 3, 2025. She will also be available to answer any questions the schoolgirls may have about career guidance and technically-oriented degree courses.

Learning from damage - What does breaking things have to do with mechanical engineering and mechatronics?

Mechanical engineering and mechatronics in a different way:

You probably think engineers sit at a desk in front of a computer all day, designing, developing and constructing.

Here you can get to know other activities that make up this profession.

We will destroy metallic samples and components together. We will look at components that have broken in the company and think about what we can learn from them.

You will examine metals with a microscope and prepare them for this.

And if something made of metal has just broken at home, you are welcome to bring it along. Maybe the kickstand or a Bowden cable from your bike? A broken knife? Maybe we can find out together why these things broke....

What should you bring with you?

Please come in clothes that you don't mind getting a little dirty.

Part 1: Experiments on the treatment of water to produce drinking water and quality tests

In the group, you will carry out a laboratory experiment on drinking water treatment and can then assess the effectiveness of the process using various analysis parameters. In the technical center, we will demonstrate and discuss further processes in the group on how differently contaminated water can be treated to produce drinking water - we will discuss how we use water as a resource as a matter of course and the practical benefits of water treatment for our daily use of water.

Part 2: Have you ever wondered why leaves are green?

In our laboratory, you will extract leaf pigments yourself and separate them using a special method - thin-layer chromatography. Find out what makes plants so unique!
