A
The Bachelor's degree (BA) is the first degree awarded after three to four years of study. The actual title of the degree depends on the subject, for example Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. The Master's degree (MA), on the other hand, is a further degree that can usually be obtained after a Bachelor's degree.
Accreditation is the process by which degree programs and universities receive recognition for meeting certain quality standards.
The university administration is a central element for the functioning and further development of a university by taking on the organisational and administrative tasks that support scientific operations.
The administration of the TH OWL is divided into five departments, four staff units and the central facility S(kim). In addition, there are various representatives and lobby groups.
An admission restriction, often referred to as a numerus clausus (NC), is a restriction on the allocation of study places that is used for degree programs with more applicants than available places. The NC indicates the minimum A-level average that applicants must achieve in order to be offered a place. The NC varies depending on the degree program and university and is based on demand and the number of places available. Some degree programs also take into account other criteria such as waiting semesters or additional selection procedures.

"Alumni" is a term from Latin and refers to graduates or former members of an educational institution, usually a university or college. In the singular, the word is "alumnus" (for men) or "alumna" (for women). If you are talking about both men and women, you can use the plural forms "alumni" (mixed or only men) or "alumnae" (only women).
Alumni often form groups or associations to maintain contact with their former fellow students, to make new contacts or to strengthen the relationship with their alma mater (the educational institution from which they graduated).

Guest students are individuals who can participate in selected courses at the university without being formally enrolled in a degree programme. The guest student programme offers a flexible way to expand your knowledge or to further educate yourself in certain subject areas without taking on the obligations of a regular degree programme.
The "Auditorium Maximum" (or "Audimax") is the largest lecture hall at a university, which is used for large lectures, public talks and events.

There are barrier-free toilet facilities at all three TH OWL locations, which enable safe and independent access for people with disabilities on campus.
The university promotes environmentally friendly mobility and therefore offers covered bicycle parking spaces at all three campuses to increase protection from the weather.
The Studierendenwerk ensures that students can successfully pursue their studies by taking care of their basic everyday needs: housing, food and money.
They offer or arrange suitable rooms and apartments, process applications for student financing (BAföG) and guarantee a wide selection of daily menus and snacks for all university members in their dining halls and cafeterias.

The calendar of events is a central overview of all important dates and events taking place at the university. It is a useful tool for students, staff and external interested parties to find out about upcoming events, lectures, workshops and other activities.
Campus development refers to the planning and implementation of measures for the further development and modernization of university locations. The aim is to create an optimal infrastructure for teaching, research and campus life.
The "Campus Foundery OWL" is the start-up center of the TH OWL. Its services are aimed at all members of the university who are interested in founding a company or developing innovative ideas.
Campus Foundery OWL offers physical spaces and infrastructure that are available to students and employees to test, validate and further develop their ideas. In addition to premises, Campus Foundery OWL also offers specialist expertise to facilitate the start-up process. This can take the form of mentoring, workshops, networking events and other resources. Campus Foundery OWL is based at the Institute for Science Dialogue (IWD) and works in partnership with the Institute for Food Technology (ILT) and the Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT).
Campus life at the university offers a lively and diverse environment that goes beyond just studying. It includes a variety of activities, events and offers that help students to network, develop personally and enjoy their time at the university.
Radio Triquency is the campus radio station of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences. It is run by students and offers a platform for creative and journalistic activities. The station enables students to gain practical experience in the field of broadcasting and to produce and distribute their own content.
The CampusCard, also known as the KIS card, is a multifunctional chip card used at the university. It serves as an important identification and service card for students and employees of the university and combines several functions in a single medium.
Our canteen and catering services offer students, staff and guests a selection of meals and drinks every day. In addition to the main meals, there are also vegetarian and vegan dishes. The offers are reasonably priced and tailored to the needs of the university community.

The Chancellor of the TH OWL is responsible for the administration and organization of the university's non-academic affairs. She works closely with other managers at the university, such as the President and the heads of departments and staff units.

The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at TH OWL has primary responsibility for the security of information technology and the data used and stored by the institution.
The university has an open environment with many users and interfaces. At the same time, it houses valuable research data and personal information. The CISO plays a crucial role in securing this data and ensuring a secure digital environment for all members of the university community.

Compensation for disadvantages is a regulation that serves to give students with disabilities, chronic illnesses or other comparable impairments equal opportunities in their studies. Compensation for disadvantages is intended to ensure that these students receive fair conditions in their studies and examinations despite their individual limitations.
Study, work and life present us all with challenges that we are sometimes unable to cope with on our own. TH OWL therefore offers a wide range of advice and support services for students and employees.
The Creativ Campus Detmold is a central location for creative and design training. It is located in the historic royal residence of Detmold and offers an inspiring environment for students of architecture, interior design, design and music production. Modern workshops, studios and laboratories promote practical work and creative development. The campus combines tradition and innovation and is a place where creative minds work together across disciplines to develop forward-looking ideas.
Credit points are a measure of the amount of work that students have to complete in a module or course. These points are part of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), which is used throughout Europe for the recognition and comparability of academic achievements.

Special attention is paid to the protection of personal data at the TH OWL. The university manages a large amount of personal data from students, employees and other stakeholders. This includes information such as names, addresses, dates of birth, academic achievements, research data and much other sensitive information. The protection of this data is a fundamental right and is safeguarded at the TH OWL by the data protection officer.
Each department at TH OWL is headed by a Dean's Office, which represents the department both within and outside the university. The dean's office includes a dean who heads the department. He or she also chairs meetings of the Faculty Council and oversees the teaching and examination activities of the members of the faculty. The Vice Dean is the deputy in these matters. A dean of studies also has the task of maintaining and improving the quality of teaching, for example by chairing the departmental study committee, advising on the development of new degree programs, monitoring the feasibility of courses and participating in the evaluation of teaching.
Each department has its own student representation, the student council, which is elected by you at the beginning of the winter semester for a period of one year. They primarily establish contact between students and professors, committees, etc. and help with all questions and problems related to your studies.
All deans and the Executive Board meet once a month at the department conference. They make important decisions regarding teaching and university development.
The five departments at the TH OWL are organizational units that are responsible for specific areas of responsibility and administrative tasks.
- Department I Student Affairs
The Department of Student Affairs is the central point of contact for all matters relating to studying at the TH OWL. It is made up of the Enrolment Office, Central Student Advisory Service, International Office, Career Service and Alumni Management as well as Evaluation and Monitoring.
- Department II Facility Management
The Facility Management department is responsible for all matters relating to buildings and areas at TH OWL and their management. It includes the Technical Operations Service, which is responsible for the maintenance and repair of technical facilities on campus. Building Management also supervises construction and relocation measures at the university and monitors occupational and operational safety.

- Department III Human Resources and Organization
The "Human Resources and Organization" department at the university is responsible for a variety of administrative and organizational tasks related to human resources and the university's organizational structure.
The department's tasks include personnel administration, job planning and advertisements, payroll accounting and remuneration as well as advice on personnel law. - Department IV Finances
The Finance Department supports the university in financial matters. It plays a decisive role in ensuring a solid financial basis. Its tasks include budget planning and monitoring, bookkeeping and accounting, procurement and contract management, third-party funding management, financial controlling, reporting, annual financial statements and tax and legal matters.
- Department V Communication and Marketing
The Communications and Marketing department coordinates and organizes the press and public relations work of OWL University of Applied Sciences with its various facets as part of external communications - from online and print media to the official website and content creation and maintenance of the central social media channels.
De-registration is the official process by which your affiliation with the university is terminated. It can take place at the student's own request or automatically, e.g. after graduation. Certain documents are required for de-registration, such as the application for de-registration and, if applicable, the return of the Campus Card. After exmatriculation, you will receive a certificate that serves as proof of completion of your studies.
The Digitalization Readiness Committee advises the university's Executive Board on all matters relating to digitalization and decides on the introduction of new digital solutions. There are 15 members of the OWL University of Applied Sciences' digitalization committee. Its goals include the standardization of solutions and the transfer of knowledge. Topics include digital teaching and the digitalization of accounting. The members meet monthly and formulate recommendations for various areas of the university. The focus is on the well-being of the entire university community in the digitalization process.
TH OWL places great importance on diversity and promotes an inclusive and appreciative environment for all members of the university community. Diversity at TH OWL refers to the recognition and appreciation of difference in terms of gender, origin, age, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability and other characteristics.
E
E-exams are electronic exams that students take on the computer. This type of examination offers a modern alternative to conventional written examinations and is increasingly being used in various degree courses. E-exams are part of the digitalization of teaching and examinations at the university.
The Executive Board manages the university. It is led by the president as its main occupation. The Executive Board drafts the university development plan, including the study programmes, research topics and the organisation of the university. This plan is an important framework that guides the other groups in the university. The Executive Board also prepares the meetings of the Senate and implements the decisions of the Senate and the University Council. It must report to the University Council and the Senate and implement its decisions. In addition to the president, who is elected as the public representative of the university every six years, the executive board also includes the chancellor, the vice president for education and sustainability, the vice president for research and transfer, and the vice president for culture, communication and international affairs.
Eduroam (Education Roaming) is a global network developed specifically for the higher education and research community. It enables students, researchers and employees of participating institutions to log into the Wi-Fi network at all participating locations worldwide with a single user account. If you have an account with the university, you can use it to log into the WiFi not only on the TH OWL campus, but also at many other universities and research institutions worldwide.
"Emergency and Assistance" refers to the measures and information provided for dealing with various emergency situations on campus. This includes safety precautions as well as the provision of contacts and resources to support students, staff and visitors in emergencies.
The Enrollment Office plays a central role in the administration of student enrolment and matriculation. It processes applications, checks the necessary documents, manages student data and issues important certificates. It also offers advice and support on administrative issues relating to studying.
Gender equality is a central component of university policy and aims to ensure equal opportunities for all members of the university. In particular, this includes promoting gender equality, supporting women in science and research and improving the compatibility of studies, career and family.
The university's e-services offer students and staff a range of digital services to support everyday study and administrative processes. These include the ILIAS learning platform, the KIS portal for exam registration and administration, Campus Card administration and digital library services. These services facilitate access to important information and tools required for studying and working at the university.
At Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, evaluation refers to the systematic process of assessing and improving teaching and other university-related activities. The aim of evaluation is to continuously improve the quality of teaching and study conditions. It is an important instrument of quality assurance and makes it possible to collect feedback from students, lecturers and other stakeholders and incorporate it into the further development of courses and study programs.
The examination regulations are a set of rules that define the implementation, organization and regulations of examinations and coursework at the university. They serve as a binding basis for all examination and assessment procedures within the degree programs.
External companies are external companies that provide services on the university premises. The Instruction for External Companies in Operations sets out safety and conduct rules for these companies to ensure the safe operation and protection of the health of all persons on campus. This includes regulations on registration, occupational safety, emergency management and environmental protection.

FabLabOWL (short for "Fabrication Laboratory Ostwestfalen-Lippe") is a creative space at the university. It offers students, researchers and external interested parties the opportunity to realize their own ideas and projects with the help of state-of-the-art technologies.
Facility management encompasses the planning, organization, administration and maintenance of the university's buildings and facilities. It ensures that the infrastructural and technical needs of university operations are met efficiently and effectively. This includes both the physical buildings and the technical systems that are necessary for the operation of the university.
The term fellow student refers to a fellow student at a college or university. These are people who attend the same or a similar academic institution at the same time and may also be taking the same degree program or courses. The word comes from Latin, where "commiliton" originally meant "comrade-in-arms" or "comrade". Today, the term is mainly used in the context of studying.
The first semester welcome at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences is an official event organized especially for new students to help them get off to a successful start to their studies. The General Students' Committee (AStA) is elected by the Student Parliament (StuPA). It represents the student body of the TH OWL and implements the resolutions of the student parliament. The AStA consists of departments that promote various university activities. These include events, support for international students and the provision of discounted writing materials.

ILIAS serves as a central platform for e-learning. Students and staff can use ILIAS to access course materials, submit assignments, participate in discussion forums and use many other functions that support learning and communication within the university.
The Infopoint is a central point of contact on campus that helps students, staff and visitors with questions and concerns. It offers a wide range of services and information to make everyday life at the university easier.
Information security at the TH OWL is of central importance to ensure the integrity, confidentiality and availability of data and information systems. Information security refers to the protection of information against unauthorized access, use, disclosure, modification or destruction. It includes various measures and practices aimed at ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information. While data protection refers to the protection of personal data, information security deals with the protection of all data.
For this reason, a position for the Information Security Officer (CISO) has been established at the university. This person is responsible for implementing and maintaining measures to secure information technology and the data stored in it at the university.
The Innovation Campus Lemgo is a dynamic centre for research, education and entrepreneurship. With a focus on technology, digitalisation and innovation, the campus provides a platform for experts, students and companies to jointly develop pioneering solutions. This is where science, business and talent work hand in hand to turn new ideas into market-ready products and processes. The campus in Lemgo stands for innovative strength and sustainable development in the region and beyond.
The Innovation Campus Lemgo e. V. (ICL e. V.) was founded to support the consistent further development of the Innovation Campus Lemgo. The structure of this association is made up of a board and a steering committee, with the office responsible for the day-to-day administration and coordination of activities.
The office plays a central role within the ICL e. V. It supports the actors who are active on the campus and takes care of the coordination of various measures to further develop the campus. If there are any questions or concerns about what is happening on campus, the office is the first point of contact.
A particular aim of the office is to strengthen networking within the campus and make the campus more attractive. This should also help to attract new partners to the campus and bring them here.
The six affiliated institutes of the TH OWL are independent research and educational institutions that work closely with the university and are linked to it both organizationally and financially. These institutes work in specific subject areas or research fields and complement the university's teaching and research activities.
- Institute for Design Strategies (IDS)
The IDS - Institute for Design Strategies researches interactions between people and space, develops sustainable strategies for architecture and uses digitalization for innovative approaches. Founded in 2021, it comprises the research areas urbanLab, nextPlace, constructionLab and perceptionLab. - Institute for Energy Research (iFE)
The iFE - Institute for Energy Research at the TH OWL is an interdisciplinary research institute that brings together experts from various disciplines, including electrical engineering, computer science, architecture, mechanical engineering and economics. The main objective of the iFE is to develop innovative solutions for efficient energy systems and technologies and to drive forward the energy transition. In doing so, they strive for a regenerative, technologically advanced, safe, sustainable and affordable energy system that is supported by all stakeholders. - Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT)
The Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) researches how technologies in factories and companies can be optimized. It helps to improve things like communication between machines, image recognition and safety checks. The inIT works on government-funded projects and helps companies with their own research. The institute supports companies in the fields of mechanical engineering, food technology, health and digitalization in using the available technologies even more innovatively. - KreativInstitut.OWL
The KreativInstitut.OWL on the Kreativ Campus Detmold is an association of the TH OWL, the University of Paderborn and the Detmold University of Music with the aim of uniting creative skills from various disciplines. The institute promotes research in the fields of digital media production (VR and AR), music informatics and film informatics. It aims to explore innovative technologies, immersive environments and the connection between the digital and physical worlds, as well as to promote human-centered design and human-computer interaction. - Institute for Life Science Technologies (ILT.NRW)
The Institute for Life Science Technologies was founded in 2011 to establish the competence platform for food quality and safety. Over the past ten years, it has been able to distinguish itself along various areas, including biotechnology, health technologies, bio-refinery, bioenergy and digitalization. With over 40 employees and eight professorships, the institute works on national and international research projects and industrial partnerships in the food quality and processing sector. - Institute for Scientific Dialogue (IWD)
The Institute for Scientific Dialogue (IWD) is the TH OWL's link between science, industry and society. It actively supports a dynamic and practical dialog between research and the general public. It integrates social input into the academic discourse and communicates scientific concepts. The IWD is also an overarching place of teaching and learning. In close cooperation with the departments, experienced students and representatives from business and management, optimal conditions for practical learning and professional orientation are created.

The International Office is a central point of contact for all matters relating to internationalization at the university. It serves both students and employees of the university as well as international guests.
The university intranet is an internal, web-based platform that has been specially developed for students, staff and lecturers at the university. It serves as a central point of contact for all important information, services and resources related to studying or working at the TH OWL.
S(kim) is a central point of contact for the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts and performs the functions of a university library, a media and computing centre and a teaching and learning centre. The Learning Centre is your point of contact for all questions related to learning. They offer students support to improve their learning and study skills. Here you can take part in workshops, take advantage of advice and use resources to strengthen your abilities. The Learning Centre promotes independent learning and helps students to organise their studies more efficiently.
In our learning rooms you will find a place to study, alone or in a group Equipped with moderation material and technology, the rooms – as well as the learning spaces in the libraries – can be used during opening hours and also on request.
In Lemgo, the learning room is currently located in room 2.163. In Detmold, it is located in room 1.016a and in Höxter in room 6.508.

The matriculation number is a unique identification number that is assigned to each student upon enrolment. It serves as a personal identifier and is used throughout the course of study.
A module handbook is an important document that contains detailed information about the individual modules of a degree program. It describes the learning objectives, content, teaching methods, the number of credit points (ECTS), the duration of the modules and the forms of examination. Module handbooks help students to better understand the structure and requirements of their degree program and make it easier for them to plan their studies.

The Dr. Waldemar Reinecke Observatory of the TH OWL is not only a place of observation, but also a place of learning and research. It is used by the university for astronomy lectures and for student research and final theses. Although individual visits and observations are not possible, the observatory is committed to imparting knowledge to the public. Lectures on astronomical topics and special events on specific astronomical events introduce interested parties to the world of astronomy.

The university's organisational chart is a graphical representation of the individual areas of the university administration. It shows the various departments, positions, roles and responsibilities.
The Studienfonds OWL foundation is a financial support programme set up specifically for students at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences and Arts and other universities in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region. The fund was established with the aim of offering support to students experiencing financial difficulties, thus facilitating access to a university education.

Parent-child rooms are special rooms designed to provide a child-friendly environment for student or working parents. These rooms are part of the measures to support the compatibility of studies, work and family and offer a practical solution for parents who need a childcare solution for their children during their stay on campus or during working hours.
Pre-courses are special preparatory courses designed to help prospective students prepare optimally for their studies. They are particularly helpful for refreshing knowledge in basic subjects or closing gaps in knowledge that are important for a successful start to your studies. These preliminary courses are usually voluntary, but are strongly recommended, especially for technical and scientific courses.
The propaedeutic course serves as a preparatory course for students to make it easier for them to start their studies and to ensure that they have the necessary basic knowledge for their subject. It is aimed in particular at first-year students and international students.
Contents and focus:
1. Language courses: German courses at level C1 in particular are offered for international students to provide the language requirements for their studies.
2. Mathematical basics: preliminary courses in mathematics and other relevant natural sciences help to close knowledge gaps and start at a uniform level.
3. Introduction to scientific work: Students learn how to conduct scientific research, work and present their findings.
4. Subject-specific introduction: Depending on the degree course, there are specific introductions that address the particular requirements of the subject in question.

The President of TH OWL has an important leading and representative role in the institution. He is the highest academic authority of the university and works closely with the deans to promote the quality of teaching and research. He develops and guides the strategic direction of the university, setting goals and initiatives to ensure the long-term development and excellence of the institution. As a representative of the university, the President acts as an external spokesperson, maintaining relationships with other universities, government agencies, industry partners, alumni and the public.
The Press Office is the central point of contact for media inquiries and public relations work. It is also responsible for external communication and the presentation of the university to the public.

The Hochschulgesellschaft Ostwestfalen Lippe e.V. promotes the development of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences. Its aim is to support the education of high performing young talent in all courses of study both ideally and materially. It also promotes dialog between the university and the public. The association is involved in various university activities and undertakings.
Committed students, graduates, teaching staff, employees, commercial enterprises and personalities from various areas of social life are invited to support the University Society.
University communication encompasses the strategic planning and implementation of communication measures to promote the image and offerings of a university. This is done through internal and external communication, public relations, marketing, crisis management and event organisation. Target groups include students, experts, the media and the public. The task of university communication is to make the university visible, to disseminate information and to build a positive reputation. Department V is responsible for this area.
The University Council advises the Executive Board on many issues relating to teaching, research and university development. It is mainly made up of external members and supervises the management of the Executive Board. It also elects the members of the Executive Board and approves the university development plan, the target agreements and the economic plan. The members of the University Council are elected for a term of office of five years.
The University Electoral Assembly is responsible for electing the members of the Presidential Board. It consists of all voting members of the Senate and the University Council.
User administration, also known as Identity Management (IdM), comprises the central administration and control of user accounts and identities within the university. The IdM system ensures that all user accounts are managed efficiently and that access rights and authorizations are assigned precisely.
The S(kim)s user advisory service provides support and advice on the university's information and communication systems.
V
The vice presidents represent the president and have representative duties. They are also responsible for specific areas, such as education and sustainability, research and transfer, or culture and communication. In the event of the death or resignation of the president, a vice president provisionally or fully takes their place.

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN for short, is a virtual, non-public network. With the university dial-in, access to the university network is possible regardless of location.
