First Taschenlampen-Festival: Exploring light and darkness

The first Taschenlampen-Festival event in Detmold takes place on June 25, 23:00 to 01:00. Students from Germany, India and Brasil are creating lighting interventions in the city using hand torches and tea light candles. The project was developed with Prof. Mary-Anne Kyriakou and visiting DAAD-Brasilian professor Dr. Betina Martau through the elective course Exploring Light and Darkness.

Themes range from raising awareness towards the impact of lighting in the city environment and how through light and supported darkness we can change perceptions. Exploring light and darkness is a learning process based on reflection by the action. Testing and experiencing perceptions of light is the main goal. People from different cultures learning to give meaning to urban spaces through light and shadow. Using very low-tech light sources as flashlights, tea candles and mobile phones, the students created a festival of light dynamic and fun. This is taking place in the centre of Detmold and the action is for almost two hours. Visitors attending the event are invited to bring their hand torch.

Start: 23:00 h at C&A, Detmold, more information: Stadtplan attached
