The automation technology today is characterized by the following trends:

  1. increasing decentralization and networking of automation
  2.  continuous detection of the state of the plant and the automation (Condition-Monitoring)
  3. increasing intelligence of the field devices

Concurrent to this, rapid changes on the market requires high flexible solutions for automation. Thus, requirements on network facilities and especially on the communication are rising. In many cases, the information processing is distributed to various automation devices, e.g. control cabinet and in the field. For example, in case of communication, higher data transfer rates or strong real-time aspects has to be considered. The results of this are new challenges in the plant engineering process with regards to automation and communication engineering. Not least, dynamic markets and rapid changes of economic conditions require a high degree of flexibility for a production plant. Engineering effort is increased because existing solutions are difficult or impossible to reuse because they are dependent on the implementation of automation and communications equipment. This results in long development times associated with high development costs and potential revenue losses.

Therefore, the goals of this project are: 

  1. the development of communication systems and engineering of complex, distributed systems
  2. reducing engineering costs and development time by a model-based design and a model-based verification of plant design
  3. facilitating the design process of a communication system with a top-down engineering approach, e.g. reuse of engineering solutions.

The project communication technologies are being developed to include aspects such as cross-communication, real-time capability and security further. In addition, the studied approaches and methods are detailed in the form of an engineering tool that allows the communication system of a complex distributed system can be designed by a model based approach.
