Applications in the field of industrial automation have an increasing demand for IEEE802.11-based Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), because of their major flexibility and greater mobility. The medium access mechanism of the legacy model does provide a deterministic mechanism through Point Co-ordination Function(PCF) which is not suitable for installing WLANs for industrial real-time traffic. Therefore the new draft IEEE 802.11e, which was ratified in the end of september 2005, introduces the HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA) with parameterized Quality of Service (QoS) and the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) with prioritized QoS. The contemporary work deals with the evaluation of HCCA in an industrial automation network with real-time requirements. Thus a simulation model of the HCCA has been implemented for the network simulator OPNET and the simulation results were compared with the EDCA in terms of latency in various scenarios.
