Voice over Internet Protocol is a fast, cheap and effective technology for user communications over long distances. Even though delays might be experienced from time to time, the appeal for VoIP is there for its practicality. This project involves the development of a gateway server to interface a VoIP server to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) adapter. Taking advantage of the fast broadband network, an internet protocol (IP) link can be established between the PSTN to form an IP-PSTN system that transports audio over IP. The project will also involve study of audio over IP protocol and its infrastructure when applied in a VoIP gateway server.
